The Unknown Rebel – Jeff Widener ================================ Often considered the most iconic photograph in history, ‘tank man’ or ‘the unknown rebel’ shows an act of courage and defiance and earned the anonymous man widespread fame. It took place during the protests at Beijing’s Tiananmen Square on June 5, 1989, and has subsequently become a symbol of the end of the Cold War era, and one of the most famous photographs of the 20th century. Four people claim to have took photos of the event, but the most reproduced image, and the most famous was by Jeff Widener. ================= "Tank Man" or "The Unknown Rebe" is the most famous photo of that moment, taken by Jeff Widener, who happened to be in Beijing for a summit between China's leaders and Mikhail Gorbachev. On June 4th 1989, the Chinese Army descended on Tiananmen Square with tanks and guns to crush a peaceful mass rally for democracy. On 5th June 1989, ‘Tank Man’ stood in front of a column of tanks leaving Tiananmen Square and blocked their way. As the first tank tried to drive around him, he stepped into its path, then climbed on top it. His act of defiance has served as an inspiration to millions of peoplearound the world.
