body and underwings diagnostic.
ear-patch that extends behind eye and over white crown gives a black
'head phone' appearance. Lack of dark shoulder patch, paler
upperparts and white rump separates it from Black Tern.
Upperparts mottled brownish black; similar to non-br ad.
non-br Palearctic migrant, present Sept-Apr, some birds overwinter;
occurs in flocks.
