 White-winged Tern

 

Chlidonias leucopterus

(339) 21 cm; 54 g

SEXES  Alike. Smallest freshwater tern in region; bill short.

BR  Black body and underwings diagnostic.

NON-BR  Black ear-patch that extends behind eye and over white crown gives a black 'head phone' appearance. Lack of dark shoulder patch, paler upperparts and white rump separates it from Black Tern.

JUV  Upperparts mottled brownish black; similar to non-br ad.

STATUS  Common non-br Palearctic migrant, present Sept-Apr, some birds overwinter; occurs in flocks.

HABITAT  Most inland water bodies, favouring wetlands.

FOOD  Fish, inverteb­rates and small crabs.

CALL Hoarse kirsch or kreek.
