  Meves's Starling

      (Long-tailed Starling)

 

Lamprotornis mevesii

(763) 34 cm; 75 g

SEXES  Alike, M > F. More slender and smaller bodied than Burchell's Starling; tail much longer but distinctly tapered. Eyes dark.

JUV  Underparts matt black and tail shorter than ad.

STATUS  Localised and sparsely distributed resident.

HABITAT  Tall woodland, especially Mo­pane with scattered Baobab trees.

FOOD  Mainly insects; also fruit and flower petals.

CALL  Series of churring notes.

BR  Monogamous. Most nests in natural tree cavities. Occasionally para­sitised by Great Spotted Cuckoo.

ALT NAME  Long-tailed Starling.
