  Rock Martin

 

Hirundo fuligula

(529) 15cm; 22g

SEXES  Alike. Likely only to be confused with uncommon brown morph Brown-throated Martin (p.232). Tail, however, square (not slightly forked) and with white spots. Throat and breast pinkish cinnamon; in flight has contrasting pale underwing coverts.

JUV  Feathers on upperparts buff tipped.

STATUS  Common resident, with altitudinal movements to lower regions in winter months; partial northerly migration recorded in some populations.

HABITAT  Rocky hills, mountainous regions, cliffs and around suburban buildings.

FOOD  Aerial insects. Sometimes feeds at night around lights.

CALL  Song a soft melodious twittering.

BR  Mono­gamous and usually solitary. Nest a cup of mud pellets usually placed under rock overhang, building or bridge.
