  Red-capped Lark

 

Calandrella cinerea

(507) 16 cm; 24 g

SEXES  Alike. Rufous crown and side breast patches very distinctive. Short erectile hind-crown crest normally held flat; underparts variable but usually white, sometimes with buffy flanks.

JUV  Appears spotted above; buf/y below with brown spots.

STATUS  Common resident. May be sedentary, nomadic, or a partial migrant.

HABITAT  Short grassland, agricultural fields and shrublands.

FOOD  Seeds and insects.

CALL  Song a jumble of melodious phrases.

BR  monogamous. Cup nest placed next to grass tuft, shrub or stone.
