  Dickinson's Kestrel

 

 

Falco dickinsoni

(185) 29 cm; 210 g

SEXES  Alike, F larger and slightly darker grey. Key features pale grey square-shaped head contrasting with dark grey body, pale grey rump and boldly barred upper tail.

JUV  Pale brown wash and less contrast in head and body colours. Eye-ring and cere blue-green or pale yellow.

STATUS  Uncommon resident in S Africa; generally sedentary.

HABITAT  Re­stricted in north-east tropical low-lying savanna woodland regions, especially where there are tall palms and Baobab trees; also found in open Mopane and miombo woodland.

FOOD  Mainly insects such as grasshoppers and crickets, also birds, frogs, snakes, small mammals (including bats) and crabs.

CALL  Strident keh-keh-keh and whistle-like kill-koo.

BR  Monogamous. Nest usually placed on top of dead palm stump, dead tree stump or even on top of a Hamerkop nest.
