  Eurasian Hobby

     (Hobby Falcon)

 

 

Falco subbuteo

(173) 32 cm; 215 g

SEXES  Alike, F > M. Densely streaked underparts, deep rufous thighs and lower belly, white cheeks and throat (with bold moustachial stripe) separate it from other similar-looking falcons (African Hobby has rufous underparts).

JUV  Underparts more boldly streaked or blotched; upperparts browner and crown paler.

STATUS  Fairly uncommon non-br Palearctic migrant, present act-Apr. Found singly, occasionally in small groups.

HABITAT  Favours low-altitude open woodland.

FOOD  Mostly flying insects, small birds (even fast-flying species such as swifts and swallows), and bats.

CALL  Generally silent in region; gives falcon-like screams.

ALT NAME  Hobby Falcon.
