  Black Heron

      (Black Egret)

 

 

Egretta ardesiaca

(69) 55 cm; 310 g

SEXES  Alike. Dark grey (almost black) plumage with black legs and yellow feet.

JUV  Duller and browner; lacks plumes.

STATUS  Mostly uncommon resident; regular local movements re­corded.

HABITAT  Swamp and wetland margins.

FOOD  Mostly fish (caught under 'umbrella' formation of wings (parasolling, as below), also crustaceans and insects.

CALL  Low cluck.

BR  Probably monogamous; nests in mixed-species colonies, usually in reedbeds.

ALT NAME Black Egret.
