  Little Grebe

Tachybaptus ruficollis

(8) 20 cm; 170 g

SEXES  Alike.

BR  Sides and front of neck dark rufous-chestnut; pale gape-spot distinctive. Eyes dark red.

NON-BR  Overall paler, chestnut on neck becoming brownish white.

JUV  Like non-­br ad with black streaking on head and neck.

STATUS  Most common and widespread grebe in region. Resident with local movements in response to water levels; usually in pairs or small groups.

HABITAT  Most inland water bodies; also saltpans and estuaries.

FOOD  Aquatic an­imals including fish, frogs, tadpoles and insects.

CALL  Long, high-pitched descending trill.

BR  Monogamous. Nest a floating heap of plant material.
