eyes, red cere and legs and plain dove-grey upperparts, throat and
breast distinguish it from other similar-sized small raptors.
Combination of grey tail with 4-5 blackish bars, and white rump
diagnostic. DARK MORPH Makes up 7-25% of the population
(varies regionally) and regularly br with pale morphs. Usually
entirely black except for barred white flight feathers and 3 narrow
white tail bars. Cere and legs red.
Upperparts brown, head and breast streaked brown, belly barred and
rump white; eyes yellow, cere and legs orange. Dark morph like ad
but with orange cere and legs.
common resident; largely sedentary.
open Acacia and broad-leaved woodland.
birds (up to young francolin size); also rodents, bats, reptiles and
twi-twi-twi-twi... and other similar notes.
Stick nest usually has social spider colony (Stegodyphus sp.)
incorporated that surrounds nest with web.
