  Great Egret

      (Great White Egret)

 

Egretta alba

(66) 95 cm; 1.1 kg

SEXES  Alike. Largest white egret, as tall as Grey Heron. Legs extend beyond tail in flight.

BR  Bill black, eyes red and lores and eye-ring emerald green; develops long white plumes.

NON-BR  Bill yellow.

JUV  Like non-br ad.

STATUS  Fairly uncommon and localised resident, nomadic in response to water levels.

HABITAT  Open water systems and flooded grassland.

FOOD  Mainly fish, also frogs, insects and reptiles.

CALL  Raucous croak-croak given in flight.

BR  Monogamous and colonial. Nests above water in trees or in reedbeds.

ALT NAME  Great White Egret.
