  Emerald-spotted Wood-Dove

      (Green-spotted Dove, Emerald-spotted Dove)

 

Turtur chalcospilos

(358) 20 cm; 64 g

SEXES  Alike, M > F. Emerald green wing spots appear black if not reflected in good light; dark bill then separates it from Blue-spotted Wood-Dove. Base of bill may show dark red if seen from close.

JUV  Upperparts flecked and barred with buff or rufous, wing spots smaller and duller.

STATUS  Locally common resident, subject to limited local movements; found singly or in pairs.

HABITAT  Variety of wooded habitats, especially Acacia woodland, riparian margins and semi-arid savanna.

FOOD  Mostly seeds of herbs and grasses; also termites and some fruit.

CALL  Slow hoo wuhoo hoo whoo speeding up to faster do do do dododododo...

BR  Monogamous. Nest a small flimsy platform of twigs and rootlets usually placed 2-3 m high on lateral thorn branch; is some­times re-used for successive clutches.

ALT NAME  Green-spotted Dove.
