  Levaillant's Cuckoo

     (Striped Cuckoo)

 

Clamator levaillantii

(381) 39 cm; 122 g

SEXES  Alike. Larger than Jacobin Cuckoo; throat and breast light to heavily streaked. Two colour morphs occur. Uncommon black morph only separable from smaller black Jacobin Cuckoo in the hand.

JUV  Upperparts and tail brown, underparts buff and variably streaked.

STATUS  Uncommon and secretive br migrant, arriving Oct, departing by May.

HABITAT  More heavily wooded areas than Jacobin Cuckoo, especially along watercourses.

FOOD  Mainly hairy caterpillars; also other insects.

CALL  Loud kreeu, kreeu followed by fast tutututututu as main calls.

BR  Brood parasite, particularly of Arrow-marked and other babblers.

ALT NAME Striped Cuckoo.
