  Black Cuckoo

 

 

Cuculus clamosus

(378) 30 cm; 90 g

SEXES  Differ slightly.

M  Only all-black cuckoo in region without a crest.

F  Similar to if but frequently barred rufous below.

JUV  Duller than ad.

STATUS  Fairly common br intra-African migrant, present late Sept-Apr.

HABITAT  Forest, dense woodland and valley bushveld.

FOOD  Mainly caterpillars, also other insects.

CALL  Slow and mournful “I'm so sick”; also whirly whirly whirly... crescendo.

BR  Brood parasite, parasitising the 3 boubous in the region and Crimson­-breasted Shrike (i.e. 4 Laniarius shrikes). Br peak later in Namibia.
