  White-browed Coucal

 

Centropus superciliosus

(-) 41 cm; 170 g

SEXES  Alike, F>M. Whitish eyebrow and cream-white streaks on head and neck very distinct­ive. Juv Burchell's Coucal has similar pale eyebrow (distribution ranges separate).

JUV  More barred and streaked than ad.

STATUS  Fairly common resident; sedentary and usually in pairs.

HABITAT  Rank vegetation adjacent to aquatic margins; also woodland and forest edges.

FOOD  Wide range of animal prey, insects, reptiles, crabs and snails.

CALL  Bubbling cascade of 'water bottle' notes similar to Burchell's Coucal.

BR  Monogamous. Untidy, partly covered deep bowl nest placed in reeds, rank growth and bushes 0.5-10 m high.
