  Mocking Cliff-Chat

 

Thamnolaea cinnamomeiventris

(593) 22 cm; 48 g

M  Distinctive bright plumage unlikely to be confused with any other species, especially with characteristic habit of tail lifting.

F  Dull grey-brown; distinctive rufous chest and belly.

JUV  Duller than ad.

STATUS  Locally common resident, sedentary with winter altitudinal movements.

HABITAT  Cliffs and boulder-strewn river margins.

FOOD  Insects and fruit; also aloe nectar.

CALL  Rich and beautiful liquid notes, sometimes in duet.

BR  Monogamous. Nests in used swallow nest with tunnel removed, in cave or under bridge.
