Phyllastrephus terrestris

(569) 21 cm; 36 g

SEXES  Alike, M > F, Upperparts dull darkish brown, chin white and belly pale off-white. In small groups of 3-6 birds in lower 2 m of thick undergrowth. Usually heard before seen, when it gives itself away by scolding, ratchet-like alarm calls.

JUV  Paler with rufous-edged feathers; gape yellow.

STATUS  Common resident, largely sedentary and in small groups in non-br season.

HABITAT  Understorey of evergreen and riparian forest, and dense wood­land thickets.

FOOD  Mostly insects, also snails, small lizards and some fruit and seeds.

CALL  Song a series of low husky notes; when disturbed, group gives series of harsh chattering chur­ring notes.

BR  Monogamous. Cup nest suspended between thin horizontal fork and bound by roots, moss and Marasmius fungus, giving a blackish appearance. Uncommon host of Jacobin Cuckoo.

ALT NAME  Terrestrial Bulbul.
