Recurvirostra avosetta

(294) 44 cm; 350 g

SEXES Alike, M > F. Unmistakable with pied plumage and long thin upturned bill.

JUV  Like ad but black plumage replaced with dusky brown; white upperparts edged pale buffy brown.

STATUS  Locally common resident, nomadic and a partial migrant; gregarious, usually in small groups.

HABITAT  Favours saline and shallow inland water bodies.

FOOD  Mostly crustaceans, insect larvae and small fish.

CALL  Contact call fluty elute, elute...

BR  Monogamous. Nest a scrape in damp or dry soil, frequently on an island not far from water's edge.

ALT NAME  Avocet.
