A newly-wed American couple, Sappho and Phil, travel to the Greek island of Lesbos in 1926 and 
get involved in a relationship with the daughter of a Russian émigré archaeologist called Helene. 
This love triangle mirrors the story of the Greek poetess Sappho, famous for her lyrics of sexual 
desire. As the three lovers live out a complex ménage-a-trois, our modern Sappho emulates the 
circumstances surrounding the passionate death of the ancient poetess.
