A sharp romantic comedy with the Lubitsch touch. When a dearly departed former playboy (Ameche) 
goes to Hell, he must convince the ruler of the realm of darkness that he has come to the right place. 
He recounts his life story including his unfaithfulness to his beautiful wife (Tierney), but as his 
life flashes in front of his eyes, he and the devil find he was a terribly good father, a horribly 
loyal husband and a hideously kindhearted soul. Academy Award Nominations: Best Color Cinematography,

Henry Van Cleve presents himself at the gates of Hell only to find he is closely vetted on his 
qualifications for entry. Surprised there is any question on his suitability, he recounts his lively 
life and the women he has known from his mother onwards, but mainly concentrating on his happy but 
sometimes difficult twenty-five years of marriage to Martha.
